Brief Description:

The united Arab Emirates is a country of southeastern Asia .Its official name is Federation of United Arab Emirates. Federation formed in 1971 by seven emirates known as Frucial states- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, sharijah , Ajman, Fujairah , Ras al – khaimah and Umm al- qaiwain. In addition to a federal president and prime minister , each emirates has a separate ruler who oversees the local government . Abu- Dhabi is the capital of UAE. It has one of the highest per capital incomes in the world at nearly $25000 .

Brief history:

The earlist singnificant settlements in the UAE date backs to the Bronze age .Parts of the UAE were settled as far back as the 3^rd Millennum BC. The UAE was a land of desert inhabited by proud and resourcetul nomadic Bedouin tribes, fishing villages and date forms . The Bedouin were known for their resource fullness and independence in the face of a harsh environment . Their code of hosbitality continues today among the modern Emirati population, who show great respect and honour to guest . The UAE’s rich history is rooted in trocde and tied to islam which came to the region in AD630 .Later , adissident sect, the carmathians,established a powerful sheikhdom and its army conwuered Mecca .

The Portuguese arrived in 1948 and by 1515 they have occupied Julfar and built a customs house, where they taxed the Gulf’s flourishing trade with India and the Far East .The Portuguese stayed on in the town only until 1633. The British then followed , asserting their naval power to safeguard trade link with to India. The area acquired the name ‘pirate coast’. In 1820s, The British fleet the qawasim navy, imposed a general Treaty of peace on the nine Arab sheikhdons and established a garrison in the Trucial coast until the creation of the UAE in 1971.

The British withdrew from the Persian Gulf in 1971, and the Trucial states became a federation called the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Two of the Trucial states , Bahrain and Oman, chose not to join the federation, reducing the number of states to seven.

During the colonial era, the British were primarily concerned with protecting their links to India and keeping any European competitors out of the area. After independence , sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nashayan presides over the federation . As a new country, the region remained a wuit backwater of fishing villages, pearling, camel herding and farning in the oasis . In the 1930s the Japanese invention of the cultural pearl, creating singnificant hardship for the local population with the loss of their largest export and their main source of earnings.

However all that changed with the discovery of oil . Ezports from Abu Dhabi began in 1962, turning the poorest emirates into the richest . In the mid 1960 ,Dubai found oil of its own . When Dubai’s oil exports started in 1969, sheikh Rashid was able to use oil revenues to improve the quality of life of his people . In 1972,federal national council is created it is a 40 mamber consultative body appointed by the seven rulers . In 1991 UAE forces join the allies against Iraq after the invasion of Kuwait . The country signed a military defense agreement with the U.S in 1994 and one with france in 1995. In 1998 UAE restores diplomatic relation with Iraq.

After the September 11 terrorist attacts on the U.S, the UAE was identified as a major financial center used by al-aaeda in transferring money to the hijackers Government orders bank to freeze the assets of 62 organisations and individuals suspected by the U.S of founding terrorism. In 2004 , after the death of sheikh Zayad Bin – sultan Al Nahyan, his son sheikh khalifa became the president. In 2005, sheikh khalifa announces plans for the UAE’s first electiona. IN December 2006 First ever national electional election held . A small number of hand picked voters chose half of the member of the Federal national council an advisory body . Four members of the Federal cabinet are woman. The Burj khalifa in Dubai , was completed in January 2010 and became the world’s tallest building at 2716 feet (828 meters) and 160 stories.

Today , the UAE is a major international tourist and business centre as well as one of the most modern , stable and sale country in the world .It has approximately 10% of the world’s total known oil reserves. Oil sector contributes 30% of GDP of the country . trade real estate and construction are large contributors of economy most notably in Dubai.
